ROBIN RHODE

Celebrated for his highly inventive performance-based videos and photographs, Robin Rhode was Born in Cape Town in 1976 and raised in Johannesburg where he graduated from the South African School of Film, Television and Dramatic Arts, Johannesburg in 2000.

Analogous to how graffiti artists operate, Rhode often uses the street and outdoor urban settings as his "canvas". His works are created through the consecutive act of drawing and photographing. The car is a running motif in his work, as it resembles an object of luxury for the non-white South African. The final work is either a photographic sequence or a digital stop animation. While many of his works embody a whimsical quality, they also often possess a more serious underlying commentary that alludes to socio-political issues and urban poverty in South Africa. Going beyond traditional methods, Rhode creates works in which spectators become participants breaking the customary artist-spectator roles.

Rhode’s first major museum solo show “Walk Off” was at The Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany in 2007, followed by his first UK institutional solo show, "Who Saw Who" at the Hayward Gallery in 2008. He has exhibited at The Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. He has also participated at The 51st Venice Biennale (2005), Prospect 1 New Orleans (2008), SITE Santa Fe (2010), and the 2012 Sydney Biennale.

His work is part of numerous private and public collections, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; The Guggenheim Museum; The Museum of Modern Art; The Studio Museum in Harlem; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

He currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
